Big Data

Technologies for Business

Edition 1.0 | Copyright 2021 | Publication Date: December 2020

Arben Asllani, University of Tennessee Chattanooga

Overview

The availability of big data is increasing as is the need for people to prepare and analyze it. Big Data Technologies for Business seeks to fill this need by presenting the material in a manner accessible to a broad audience including non-technical managers, business students and other professionals. Big data technologies are no longer the exclusive province of dedicated computer programmers. This book assumes little or no prior programming experience. Topics are introduced conceptually, intuitively, with pseudocode, and with fully worked examples including code. In this manner, students learn to use various essential technologies including, among others, Hadoop, Spark and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Features

Explore big data topics intuitively and conceptually
Each technology topic is first introduced intuitively followed by a conceptual discussion to assure an overall understanding.

Enjoy the continuity of free integrated cloud-based technologies
The educators/students free version of Amazon Web Services (AWS) is used as a platform to access the Hadoop cluster and its ecosystems, throughout.

Enhance student learning with video introductions
A video for each chapter presents step-by-step instructions for setting up and accessing the numerous features of a big data environment and related software. These videos can be used to reinforce learning or to free up classroom time for a broader discussion of the material, its significance, and application.

Use the leading big data technologies
Students learn-by-doing with hands-on exercises central to the book. To assure success, Python, Java, or Scala code is provided in the book when necessary and on the companion website. Prior experience with these languages is not necessary to complete the activities.

Focus on business applications
The discussion, examples and exercises feature business uses to illustrate how big data technologies are transforming many businesses and have the potential for transforming others.
